Matthew is the Partner in charge of our Insurance Group in Brisbane. He has over 20 years’ experience in insurance litigation and actively encourages alternative dispute resolution. He has participated in over 500 settlement conferences, mediations and case appraisals.
Matthew has a detailed knowledge of the Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002 QLD (PIPA), Civil Liability Act 2003 QLD (CLA) and the various Workers' Compensation Acts and how the interaction of these Acts affects indemnity, liability and quantum issues. Since PIPA was introduced in Queensland in 2002 and the CLA in 2003, he has conducted and supervised over 1000 public liability and product liability claims that come within the PIPA framework for insurers.
Matthew's experience extends to interpretation of broadform liability, construction, business, household and motor vehicle insurance policies and the defence of catastrophic claims, property and economic claims. He has also acted in the defence of asbestos claims for Amaca Pty Ltd, the major defendant in asbestos litigation in Australia for the last 10 years.
In November 2021, Matthew was listed in the Recommended category in the Doyle's Guide Leading Dust Diseases Lawyers (Defendant) – Queensland, 2021 list.
